As Bob Merritt’s column on page 48 so aptly reflects, God loved us so much that He gave us animals. Throughout history, animals have sustained human life—by providing food, clothing, and labor for humans. Along the way, certain animals have also

provided us warm, loving companionship, and these are the ones we celebrate on the cover and in this issue.

Iams, the pet nutrition and care company, has a really cool quiz to help you identify the best breed of dog or cat for you and your family. The American Kennel Club (AKC) provides a plethora of information on specific dog breeds, and where to find them. Likewise, the Cat Fanciers’ Association’s web site is a fantastic resource for all things kitty.

The options for pet ownership are not just limited to dogs and cats, so we didn’t limit our information to those species either. Whether you prefer fish, birds, or reptiles and amphibians, you’ll find interesting content on your pet’s selection and care.We also hope that our pet feature will impress upon you how essential it is to be a responsible pet owner, and to support local organizations that provide a helping hand to pets who, through no fault of their own, are in need. With pet ownership comes much responsibility and 400 Edition applauds the efforts of countless volunteers and professionals who provide care for abandoned and mistreated pets. Those organizations are always in need, so keep them in mind as worthy donation causes. Before trotting down to one of the national pet stores in your area, contact a local shelter and see if you can find your new best friend there.
