There are some who believe that those of us in North Georgia will have a festival for any reason. In fact, I first heard that comment in association with Bear on the Square, a festival that came about after a bear really was spotted on the historic Dahlonega square.

Back in 1996, a bear cub was carefully captured after scaling a tree, but not before it caused quite a stir among the locals. Nick and Glenda Pender, local music icons, joined forces with a group of merchants to honor that disoriented cub and celebrate all things Appalachian!

Now in its twelfth year, Bear on the Square Mountain Festival kicks off another beautiful spring in North Georgia. From April 18th to the 20th, the quaint downtown area will be host to a variety of music, art, food, and lots of fun—exemplified by our cover musicians Joel Cordele and Sonny Houston of Gold Rush. For more information about this event, see page 19 and www.BearOnTheSquare.org.

The festival will account for one weekend of a promising spring, but you won’t want to miss other options within our pages—ideas on local travel and some locations way beyond the GA-400 corridor. We also present some ideas on unique ways to get to your chosen destination, including trains, ships, and some classic automobiles.

If your plan is to stay put, our articles on relationships will offer valued insight. Whether it’s a reflection about your dear mother on the day honoring her, or some tips on making your relationships better, you’ll find lots of input from our columnists and guest contributors about human interaction.

As always, we’ve packed this issue with some of the most interesting things we’ve found. There are lots of fun happenings in North Georgia this month, and we knew you wouldn’t want to miss a thing.
